Farmers Powering Communities is a collaborative initiative—launched in September 2022 by American Farmland Trust, Edelen Renewables, and Arcadia, and strengthened in May 2023 with Aggreko Energy Transition Solutions—that champions the integration of renewable energy and agriculture. Its mission is to enable farmers, ranchers, and landowners to steward their land sustainably while generating income through community-scale solar projects (25–50 acres) under the Smart Solar℠ model, which prioritizes placing solar on less productive or already disturbed land and supports agrivoltaics—growing crops beneath solar panels. The initiative aims to build 500 MW of solar capacity over five years, providing clean, affordable energy to working-class, low- and moderate-income communities—all while placing land stewards and their legacy at the center of its narrative.
