Global solar power is set to surpass nuclear electricity generation for the first time this summer, marking a milestone in the rapid expansion of renewables. While solar only produces during daylight and remains behind hydro, nuclear, and wind on an annual basis, its surging capacity—now 1,866 gigawatts, ten times more than in 2014—has pushed summer output to record highs. In June through August 2025, solar is projected to exceed 260 terawatt hours per month, overtaking nuclear’s peak of 252 TWh. This growth, averaging 25% annually since 2020, has been fueled by solar’s low cost and fast deployment, as well as increasing use of battery storage to balance intermittent supply. The shift highlights both the challenges and opportunities for utilities, which must modernize grids to handle fluctuations while leveraging solar-plus-battery systems to reduce fossil fuel reliance and emissions.
