Space Solar Panels Could Power Most of Europe by 2050

Aug 23, 2025 | News

A new study from King’s College London suggests that space-based solar power (SBSP) could be a game-changer for Europe’s energy future, potentially slashing the need for land-based renewables by 80% and cutting overall system costs by 15% by 2050. Using a NASA design that collects sunlight in orbit and beams it down to Earth, researchers modeled how it would work across 33 countries and found it could deliver steady, gigawatt-scale power while easing reliance on batteries and weather-dependent renewables. There are still big hurdles, like the cost of launching and maintaining the system, plus risks from space debris, but the study says Europe could follow Japan’s lead and use its strong history of international cooperation to build a shared SBSP system—helping the continent move toward net-zero with a reliable, around-the-clock energy source.
