Swift Current Energy has officially launched its 800-MWDC Double Black Diamond Solar project in Illinois, now the largest operational solar facility east of the Mississippi River. Located near Springfield, the project was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting event attended by public and corporate leaders, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. The City of Chicago, along with other major organizations such as CVS Health, Loyola University Chicago, and State Farm, is sourcing renewable energy from the project via Constellation NewEnergy. Notably, approximately 70% of Chicago’s municipal power needs—covering key infrastructure like O’Hare and Midway airports—are now supplied by the solar facility.

Constructed with U.S.-made components and supported by over 500 union jobs, Double Black Diamond Solar aligns with Illinois’ Clean and Equitable Jobs Act, promoting diverse hiring and community investment. The project is expected to generate $100 million in local tax revenue over its lifetime, with a majority benefiting public schools in Sangamon County. Swift Current Energy has committed an additional $10 million to community development initiatives. Backed by financing from Google and major financial institutions, the project showcases how large-scale renewable infrastructure can drive economic growth, job creation, and cleaner energy across the region.
